Counselling

Are you:
-
Experiencing isolation, mood changes, anxiety, depression, grief or stress during the perinatal period or supporting someone who is?
-
A parent or family with kids under 19 looking to work through difficult situations related to parenting or your family life?
We offer free counselling sessions to parents and families who are experiencing barriers to private therapy such as transportation, language, childcare, or no private insurance. Counselling is provided by Sumi Iqbal, MA, Registered Counselling Therapist (Candidate).
Services include:
-
Individual therapy that is personalized using therapeutic approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Solution-Focused Therapy (SFT), mindfulness-based techniques and trauma-informed counselling.
-
Couples therapy to help you and your partner navigate relationship changes and learn to resolve conflict in an effective, respectful way while identifying shared parenting goals.
-
Family therapy that supports the development of healthier relationships and communication between parents, children and extended family members.
-
Mental health assessments to help identify symptoms of mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety, with referrals to a family doctor for diagnosis if needed.
We offer:
-
Counselling in English, Hindi and Urdu. Interpreters available for other languages, if needed.
-
Assistance with transportation and childcare, if needed.
-
Culturally sensitive and trauma-informed care: The therapist is equipped to provide supportive care that respects your values, culture, and unique experiences.
-
Daytime and evening availability: Mondays 10 am to 2 pm and Wednesdays 3 to 7 pm.
-
Appointments in person at Nova Village or via telehealth (phone or video call).
A note on language: We recognize the diversity of gender identities and expressions. The language in the perinatal mental health world typically reflects cis-heteronormativity and this needs to change. We support gender self-determination. We refer to mothers, fathers, parents, and birthing people in an effort to represent and include everyone in our diverse community.
